Whether you're required by law, your workplace, or your profession or you simply want to be prepared at home, first aid training is an essential skill. However, it’s a skill that 82% of people don’t have, or haven’t practiced in over three years.
In Alberta, you can now complete a major portion of your first aid certification online, making the process more accessible without compromising quality.
This guide covers exactly how online and blended first aid training works in Alberta, who it’s for, what to expect, and how certification matches provincial standards. You’ll also find the most relevant courses, practical timelines, and steps to register.
Is First Aid Training Really Online Now?
Short answer: Partly.
Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards require hands-on skills assessment for certification but much of the required theory can now be completed online, at your own pace.
This blended format is approved for:
Standard (Intermediate) First Aid (SFA)
Emergency (Basic) First Aid (EFA)
CPR and AED courses
Health care provider certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS)
Babysitting, child care, and youth readiness training
“Blended first aid training lets people fit life-saving education into their schedules, while ensuring they still learn practical skills in person,” says Ahmed Kermalli, Director of Lifesaver YEG.
Immediate electronic certification is provided upon completion. All course modules meet both Alberta OHS and Canadian first aid standards.
Who Needs First Aid Training?
Most workplaces and professions require first aid training. It’s mandatory for certain job roles under Alberta OHS Code. Here’s who commonly participates:
Health Care Providers: Required BLS, ACLS, or PALS certifications.
Employers & Staff: OHS regulation dictates minimum training standards based on workforce size and risk (source: Government of Alberta OHS Code [2023]).
Parents & Caregivers: Highly recommended for babysitters and anyone caring for children.
Educators, Coaches, & Volunteers: Often required by schools, camps, and sports organizations.

Worksites with 5-9 employees require at least one certified first aider; 20+ require two or more depending on shift patterns.

How Does Blended First Aid Training Actually Work?
Blended first aid training splits certification into two parts:
1. Online Learning Module
Self-paced, completed on your schedule (2–6 hours depending on course)
They include videos, and scenario-based lessons
2. In-Person Skills Session
Hands-on practice with a certified instructor
Demonstrate CPR, AED use, bandaging, and scenario response
You must finish both parts to receive certification. Digital certificates are generally available the same day.
